Classic Gen-X irony: we're FAT!
I just realized this classic irony of my generation. Perhaps I'm just slow.
We grew up being told by our parents and grandparents to finish our food, even when we swore we were no longer hungry. They would argue that there are people starving in Africa (or China, depending on the family, I guess), and that we shouldn't waste food. So we were guilted into eating beyond what our bodies were telling us we needed.
Now we're stuck with a culture of obesity. Obesity in our country is an epidemic and is connected with far more health risks and diseases than smoking. Yet smoking is seen as taboo in our great nation while obesity is seen as an illness. Yes, I know, some people suffer from glandular problems and such, but in most cases, obesity is a lifestyle.
Overconsumption is addictive, and Americans are hooked. We consume more fuel, more energy, more food, and more useless crap than any other nation. That's called culture. And, unfortunately, globalization of culture is teaching other nations to follow in our fat footsteps.
