ExxonMobil spent $16 Million to fund disinformation campaign on global warming science

ExxonMobil continues to dump polluting, carcinogenic, and greenhouse gas pollution into the atmosphere despite evidence of the harm they are doingIn their continued effort to confuse the irrefutable facts about global warming, ExxonMobil funds multiple Institutes (e.g. Cooperative Environmental Institute, Marshall Institute) to publish misleading facts about global warming. While this misinformation is not nearly as frequent or as reputable as the overwhelming scientific concensus on global warming, it is gaining nearly equal press time, helping confuse consumers in the US and elsewhere. ExxonMobil has already spent nearly $16 Million to fund a carefully crafted campaign of confusion and misinformation on global warming.

ExxonMobil has gone as far as hiring many of the individuals and agencies that have helped tobacco stay so successful despite the proven health risks associated with smoking. The tactics of the oil giant have been compared to ongoing tactics used by the tobacco industry, and rightfully so. ExxonMobil has gone as far as hiring many of the individuals and agencies that have helped tobacco stay so successful despite the proven health risks associated with smoking.

On a more personal note, I was very disheartened to learn that the NSTA (National Science Teachers Association), which I was a member of until this weekend, is heavily funded by ExxonMobil and has helped cloud the issue of global warming in our nation's schools.

NASA quietly changes mission statement to delete mention of Earth

NASA meatball logoSometime in February, NASA quietly altered its mission statement. Since 2002, the all-important mission statement read:

"To understand and protect our home planet; to explore the universe and search for life; to inspire the next generation of explorers ... as only NASA can."

This year, it was changed. The phrase "to understand and protect our home planet" was slipped out, and the mission, clearly published on this year's budget and planning documents, states tthe agency’s mission "to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research."

Aggressive presidency ignores liberty and history

Recently, more and more people feel they’ve been stepped-on by our administration as it has increased its power. Our government, which had been a relatively smooth blanket over the nation for centuries, has slowly built itself up into a power pyramid resembling the governments of the earlier second millennium.

Are you angry? Curious? Wondering how a government establishes such powers? Read the whole story at TheSequitur.com.

Greenpeace: Bush is a "Climate Criminal"

It is now clear to the rest of the world that the US is responsible for far more than its share of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, the gasses responsible for global warming. What is also clear is that the time for change has long since arrived and the Bush administration sits back and does nothing. What is worse is that 6 years ago, while first campaigning for president, Bush promised that he was committed to the environment and would sign and ratify the Kyoto Protocol. One of his first acts as president was to withdraw from the Kyoto talks and refuse to sign the treaty.
